Full Body Exam: Skin Cancer Screening
Comprehensive Skin Exam at Aberdeen Dermatology Associates
What Is a Full Body Skin Exam?
A full body skin exam is a comprehensive evaluation performed to check your skin for any suspicious moles, growths, or lesions that may indicate skin cancer or other dermatological concerns.
Why Are Skin Cancer Screenings Important?
- 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
- Over 3 million cases are diagnosed annually in the U.S.
- Early detection is key—when caught early, skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma are highly treatable.
Who should Get Screened?
Annual skin exams are recommended for everyone, especially if you have:
- Multiple moles or atypical moles
- A personal or family history of skin cancer
- Frequent sun exposure or tanning bed use
- A weakened immune system
- Fair skin, freckles, or a history of sunburns
What to Expect During Your Appointment
- A head-to-toe skin check, including the scalp, nail beds, soles of feet, and between fingers/toes
-
Focus on areas with:
- Unusual color, shape, or size
- Irregular borders or multiple colors
- Diameters >6mm (about ¼ inch)
- Any areas of concern will be closely examined with a dermatoscope
What Happens If Something Looks Suspicious?
- A biopsy may be performed—this is a quick, simple procedure to collect a sample for lab testing
- Results typically return within 1–2 weeks
-
If cancer is detected, treatment may include:
- Surgical excision
- Topical medications
- Cryotherapy
- Curettage and Electrodesiccation
- Superficial Radiation Therapy
Common Skin Cancers We Screen For:
- Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
- Melanoma
